How do you pronounce Wanchese?
WAN-chese (sounds like one-cheese)

How did the village get its name?
In 1584, the first English settlement was on Roanoke Island.  The settlers had frequent contacts with the Native Americans.  The towns Manteo and Wanchese, are both namesakes of Native American chiefs who befriended the New Americans. Chief Manteo and Chief Wanchese were the only Native Americans who later made the voyage to England with Sir Walter Raleigh.  To view the entire story, watch the outdoor drama the Lost Colony in Manteo.

Where does Fisherman’s Wharf get its seafood?
Wanchese Fish Company was established in 1936 and was run by Malcolm Daniels.  The company is run by his fifteen children today. With the restaurant literally right on the docks, the seafood is the freshest on the Outer Banks. 

When is the best time to see boats unloading their catch?
From any seat in the restaurant, one can view boats coming and going on a daily basis.  Depending on the season, the best time to view unloading boats can vary.  Shrimp season generally ranges from mid July through September, with Friday and Saturday (morning/lunch) being the best time to come. 

Do you have access for individuals with handicaps?
Yes, we have an elevator to assist individuals.

Can the restaurant accommodate large parties?
Yes, please call ahead for seating.  We do not take reservations, but appreciate large parties calling ahead so we may have your table ready as soon as possible. 

What kind of payment do we take?
Cash, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and travelers checks.

Do we serve alcohol?
We do not serve alcohol.  However, you are sure to enjoy the family friendly atmosphere of this restaurant.

Can we explore the docks while visiting?
Yes, you are encouraged to bring your camera and take in all the sites.  Please visit our touch tank, walk the docks, see the boats, drop a line overboard and experience the everyday life in a fishing village. 

What else is there to do in Wanchese?
Wanchese is known for its fishing and boat building.  While visiting you may book a dolphin tour, sunset cruise, or half and full day charter boat fishing.  

Where can I buy local whole sale seafood?
Visit Captain Malc’s Seafood Market located right in front of Fisherman’s Wharf. Capt. Malc’s will pack and ice your seafood in a cooler for the ride home.  Plus, the retail store is equipped to steam all your seafood.
